Stephen Shiffer was born December 25, 1961 in Williamsport, Pennsylvania, and raised in Lebanon and Lancaster counties.  He began study of the piano at age 4 from his mother Elisabeth, and performed in several of her studio piano recitals.  At age 8 he chose the trombone as his instrument, and began to perform in the Cocalico school band program.  Prior to his junior year in high school he was accepted as a student of James Erdman, trombone soloist with the President's Own United States Marine Band.  In 1984 Steve graduated from the Dana School of Music at Youngstown State University, with a Bachelor of Music in Music Education.  While at the Dana School he was a student of Vern Kagarice and Michael Crist.

 

Steve has maintained a private teaching practice and been a freelance musician for over 25 years throughout Central Pennsylvania and the Mid-Atlantic region.  As a member of Quartet Die/Posaunen he was a past performer at the International Trombone Workshop, the Eastern Trombone Workshop, and the New England Trombone Workshop.  He was featured as a soloist with the Lebanon Valley College Honors Band, as well as the Garden Spot HS band.  Steve continues to provide quality private music instruction at his studio, and is very active as a performing tenor and bass trombonist.  He resides with his wife Faith, adjunct instructor of clarinet and saxophone at Elizabethtown College, and freelance musician, in Stevens, PA.
